FAQs - Web Terms and Acronyms

What is a browser?

A browser is a program that you use to surf or "browse" the internet. Some of the most common browsers are:

  • Internet Explorer
  • Firefox
  • Safari
What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is commonly referred to as your website's address. For example, the domain name of this website is "webweaversintl.com."

Choosing a domain name is one of the first things that you need to do when creating a new website. Domain names are leased annually, and you can check the availability of a domain name at www.godaddy.com.

What is a Server?

A server is a computer that is permanently connected to the Internet and is used to store your website's files. When someone visits your website they are simply accessing / viewing the files that are saved on the server (in other words, your web pages!).

A server is a necessary component in creating a website. They are usually leased on an annual basis, with the price per year depending on how many files you need to store and what kind of technologies your website uses.

What is a content management system?

A content management system is a program that allows you to easily update the content of your website, even if you do not know anything about web programming. Read more about content management systems to see how!

What is the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)?

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main organization in charge of international standards for the World Wide Web. The consortium was created to ensure compatibility and further the development of technologies such as HTML, XHTML, and CSS.

Web Weavers International makes sure that your website's coding complies with W3C standards, helping assure that your website loads properly across an array of different browsers.

What are HTML & XHTML?

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the predominant coding language used to create web pages. XHTML stands for Extensible HyperText Markup Language and is the successor to HTML. It has the same abilities of HTML, but it also conforms to XML syntax.

Current Browsers will read both HTML and XHTML, however XHTML is the markup language of the future. As a result, Web Weavers International uses XHTML to create your website, keeping you prepared for years to come.

What is CSS?

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet, and it is a language that is usually combined with HTML or XHTML to define the visual presentation of a web page.

Proper use of CSS helps not only with visual presentation, but also with search engine optimization. For this reason Web Weavers International always uses validated external CSS stylesheets, helping search engines read your content.
